Family Resources

What do educators and researchers mean when they say it’s important for families to be involved in their children’s education?

As you might guess, this question has many answers. Generally, when families are interested in what happens at school, children know their parents care about them and want to help them succeed.

Some parents may have time to volunteer in classrooms. When a parent reads to children or helps them practice math lessons, the teacher has a chance to give extra instruction to other students or to plan a new lesson.

Many parents work and cannot help during the school day. These parents can be involved in education at home by helping with homework, making or finding interesting and educational activities to do with their children, or connecting daily life to things children are learning in school. (Grocery shopping and cooking offer lots of opportunities to practice math skills, for example.)

Parents have both rights and responsibilities related to their children’s schooling. These are defined and explained in federal laws about education. You can find out what the law says by selecting the No Child Left Behind link on the left side of this page.

However your family chooses to get involved in education, WV Parent Connections offers resources that can help. On the left side of this page are several links to activities and information. Please explore!
